In the next list of the 10 Most… I have listed the 10 most popular commands used in Linux systems (and not only) in 2024, published as part of the Admin Tips series on the Linuxiarze.pl portal

1. fdisk
fdisk is a Linux command used to create and manipulate the partition table of a disk. It is used to view, create, delete, change, resize, copy, and move partitions on a hard disk using a dialog interface.

2. fsck
fsck is used to examine and optionally repair one or more Linux file systems. A file system can be a device name (e.g. /dev/hdc1, /dev/sdb2), a mount point (e.g. /, /usr, /home), or a file system label or UUID (e.g. UUID=8868abf6-88c5-4a83-98b8-bfc24057f7bd or LABEL=root). In order to shorten the total time needed to check all file systems, the fsck program will attempt to check file systems located on physically different disk drives in parallel.

3. dmesg
dmesg (ang. diagnostic message) – a Unix family system command that displays the kernel ring buffer. It allows, among other things, to display system boot messages. dmesg is used to check or control the kernel ring buffer. The default action is to display all messages from the kernel ring buffer.

4. dd
dd is a powerful and useful tool available in Unix and Unix-like operating systems. Its purpose is to convert and copy files. In Unix and Unix-like operating systems such as Linux, almost everything is treated as a file, even block devices: this makes dd useful for things like cloning disks or wiping data. The dd utility is available out-of-the-box in most, if not all, Linux distributions.

5. sed
Sed is a text filtering/transforming editor. The sed program reads data from specified files or from standard input if no files are specified, makes edits according to a list of commands, and writes the results to standard output.

The chroot command in Linux/Unix is used to change the root directory. Each process/command in Linux/Unix has a current working directory called the root directory. chroot changes the root directory of currently running processes, as well as child processes.

The adduser package (in Debian and Ubuntu) provides 4 tools: adduser, addgroup, deluser and delgroup, we will deal with the first two. adduser creates new users and groups and adds existing users to an existing group.

TOP of the TOP 2023
In the summary of 2023, I decided to make a list of the 10 most popular operating systems of the database of Linuxiarze.pl website. This list includes operating systems from the following families: Linux, BSD, Solaris, DOS, AROS, MikeOS, UNIX, and other operating systems that are or were developed independently, or are based on other existing projects.
As always, I took into account views of distribution/system pages, download pages and system installation pages.
Selecting the TOP 10 of the 2023, which you paid more attention to than other systems, may be interesting, but should not be a surprise.
A little surprise for me was the lack of systems other than based on the Linux kernel in the top 10 (or even 20)…

Debian – a project of free distribution of the GNU/Linux and GNU/kFreeBSD operating systems carried out by volunteers around the world. There are also projects within Debian to create GNU/Hurd distributions, other BSD variants, and even free software distributions for the Windows platform.
1. Debian GNU/Linux
The Debian project was started in 1993 by Ian Murdock and its current stable version is “Jessie”. In addition to the stable version, a test version, an unstable version and an experimental version, which is not intended for use, are also being developed.

2. Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE)
Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is built on Debian packages from the testing branch. Just like the Ubuntu-based version, it includes non-free codecs and drivers installed by default, thanks to which a novice user has no problem playing popular audio and video files.

3. SparkyLinux
SparkyLinux is a Linux distribution built on Debian. It has a rich set of programs, codecs and plug-ins pre-installed, allowing you to work freely on your computer. The first version number 1.0 with the code name “Venus” was built on the stable branch of Debian 6 “Squeeze”.

4. antiX
antiX is a Live distribution intended for older computers. The default system desktop is IceWM. AntiX is intended to provide a lightweight but fully functional operating system. Until version 11, antiX was based on SimplyMepis. Since version 12, antiX is built from scratch on Debian stable packages.

5. MX
MX is a Linux distribution based on antiX. The system uses the Xfce desktop by default. The project is developed in cooperation with the Mepis distribution community.

6. Slax
Slax is a Linux distribution built on Slackware by Tomáš Matějíček. The system is built of modules that can be added or removed, which affects the speed of the system. Starting with version 9.2.1, Slax is also based on Debian.

7. Deepin
deepin (previously: Deepin, Linux Deepin, Hiweed GNU/Linux, Hiwix) is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that aims to provide an elegant and user-friendly operating system. The system has been in development since 2004 and originally launched as Hiwix 0.1 in February 2004. At that time it was based on Morphix and equipped with the IceWM window manager.

8. Tails
Tails (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) is a Live Linux distribution for safe and anonymous use of the Internet. It was built on Debian from the stable branch. The system is a continuation of the Incognito LiveCD project, which was based on Gentoo Linux.

9. GParted Live
GParted (GNOME Partition Editor) is a disk partition management tool. The program allows you to create, copy, read, delete, move and resize partitions. It supports many types of file systems, such as Btrfs, ext2, ext3, ext4, FAT16, FAT32, HFS, HFS+, JFS, SWAP, NTFS, Reiser4, ReiserFS, UFS and XFS.

10. Clonezilla Live
Clonezilla is a specialized live Linux distribution that allows you to make copies of the entire system or individual directories and restore them. The main version is built on the unstable “Sid” branch of Debian and the alternative version is based on Ubuntu.
