AnduinOS installation

anduinos

AnduinOS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution with a GNOME desktop designed and styled to resemble Windows 11.

For this installation, I used the AnduinOS 1.1.7 LTS ISO media. I installed it on a virtual machine with 30 GB of disk space, 2 processor cores, and 4 GB of RAM.

I first tried using the older AnduinOS 1.1.3 LTS media, which failed to start the graphics server in both normal and safe modes. Therefore, I downloaded the newer version, 1.1.7 LTS, which booted successfully.

The BIOS-based live media does not have the ISOlinux bootloader (as was the case in older versions of Ubuntu), but rather features GRUB, which boots machines from UEFI or BIOS.

After starting the graphics and desktop server, you can test the system in live mode.

To begin installation, select the installer icon from the desktop or the applications menu.

In the first installer window, select the default system language, here: Polish.

choose language

Select the keyboard layout, here: Polish.

You can install proprietary drivers and support for additional multimedia formats, and download update packages during system installation.

The next step allows you to partition the disk and allocate partitions for system installation in manual or automatic mode. Advanced features allow you to use LVM (Logical Volume Manager – an operating system mechanism for managing storage space) or encryption.

I chose to wipe and encrypt the entire disk.
I was required to enter a password to encrypt the disk and then decrypt it.

Summary

AnduinOS uses a slightly modified GNOME desktop by default, designed to resemble the MS Windows 11 desktop. This is undoubtedly an advantage for beginners just starting out with Linux. Switching from Windows can often be a struggle, and many newcomers quickly give up, unable to navigate a different environment. AnduinOS tries to minimize the visual impact, which I consider a big plus.

The Live system uses about 1.4 GB of RAM at startup, which I consider a good result, but not the best.

After installation and booting from the hard drive, AnduinOS, without additional applications and services, uses about 1.3 GB of RAM, which I also consider a pretty good achievement.

It’s important to note that AnduinOS, like Ubuntu, isn’t available for old 32-bit machines, and old 64-bit machines may not be powerful enough to run AnduinOS. AnduinOS is aimed only at newer computers with 64-bit processors.

Personally, I consider installing AnduinOS, like Ubuntu, on a computer with less than 4 GB of RAM to be a mistake.

The only difference worth mentioning is the lack of Snap support, which has been removed from the system.

Considering the relatively quick (about 15 minutes) system installation on disk, its simplicity without options for more advanced users, and the need to update packages during installation, I can confidently say that I can recommend AnduinOS LTS to beginner Linux users.

I should also add that I don’t see any significant differences in the user experience between AnduinOS and Ubuntu – it’s still Ubuntu, just with a different look.

Linux Mint 22 Installation

linux mint 20 kde

Linux Mint is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu, equipped with the Cinnamon, Mint and Xfce desktops. The system installer offers the possibility of installing non-free codecs and drivers, thanks to which a novice user has no problem playing popular audio and video files. The Mint release cycle depends on Ubuntu releases and new versions of the system are released about 1-2 months after the official premiere of Ubuntu.

For the purposes of this installation, I used the Linux Mint 22.1 Live/Instal ISO media with the Cinnamon desktop in UEFI mode. I performed the installation on a virtual machine, to which I assigned 20 GB of disk space, 1 processor core and 4 GB of RAM.

The live media is equipped with GRUB, which boots machines with UEFI or BIOS and has a graphical installer that should be run after the live system and graphical desktop have loaded.

1. The live system is started via GRUB, which also offers access to UEFI Firmware settings and OEM installation (for hardware manufacturers).

boot linux mint

2. From the live system desktop, select the Install Linux Mint icon, and select the default installation language (here: Polish) in the first window.

choose language

3. Then select the keyboard layout (here: Polish).

choose keyboard leyout

4. Now the installer allows you to install multimedia codecs that are required to play some audio and video formats. This is optional, but useful.

install multimedia codecs

5. The next step is to select the disk or partition for Linux Mint installation.
You can allocate the entire disk by selecting the “Erase disk” option or select “Use another solution” to install Linux Mint on the selected partition.

disk partitioning

6. The “Advanced Features” option provides the ability to encrypt the entire disk.

disk encrypt

7. If you have selected the disk encryption option, in the next step you must enter the disk encryption password.

disk password

8. Confirming the settings will start the installation of Linux Mint on the computer’s disk.

confirmation

9. The next selection of settings concerns the time zone in which you are located (here: Poland, Warsaw).

time zone

10. The last settings window provides the ability to select the target system username, computer name (host), user password, automatic login option and encrypt the home directory (irrelevant in the case of installing the system on a single partition, without a separate home partition).

user settings

11. The installer has started its tasks, so wait for them to finish. The entire installation process on my machine finished after about 15 minutes.

installation process
installation finished

12. Given that I chose disk encryption during installation, after starting the system from the disk, a password was required to decrypt the disk, which I set during system installation.

disk decryption

13. After starting Linux Mint for the first time, the Welcome application was automatically loaded, which allows you to configure and adjust individual system settings.

welcome
welcome

Summary

Installing Linux Mint based on Ubuntu is simple and intuitive, and does not require advanced knowledge of Linux. The individual stages of installation allow you to configure individual, basic system elements, and the rest of the configuration can be easily carried out after the first start of the system from the disk, using the Witaj application.

In the case of automatic installation on the surface of the entire disk, with encryption, the installer only encrypted the root partition, the EFI and SWAP partitions are not encrypted.

The system in idle mode, without running additional applications, uses about 1GB of RAM, which I consider, considering the Cinnamon desktop, to be quite a good result.

Generally speaking, Linux Mint can be recommended to Linux beginners.

TOP 10 Linux distributions offering support for 32-bit architecture in 2025

sparkylinux 6

The beginning of 2025, as always, brings new releases of various Linux distributions, mainly 64-bit, but we should not forget about the still active, maybe already outdated 32-bit hardware architecture (i686). Some open-source projects are still actively developing this architecture, it should be borne in mind that it will disappear completely in the near future.

It should also be taken into account that home computer users still have working laptops or desktops with 32-bit processors that still fulfill their tasks.

My list provides information about Linux-related projects collected on the Linuxiarze.pl portal, that still support 32-bit systems. The list of Linux 32-bit distributions contains only ACTIVE projects, without awarding points and stars, which can be done by any of you.

TOP of the TOP 2024

top of the top 2024

The first ranking of all operating systems collected on the Linuxiarze.pl portal in 2025 provides the most popular operating systems from the family: Linux, BSD, Solaris, DOS, AROS, MikeOS, UNIX, TempleOS, Android and others, which are or were developed independently, or are based on other, existing projects.

As always, I took into account the views of the distribution/system pages, download pages and system installation pages.

Choosing the top ten of 2024, to which you paid more attention than to other systems, may be interesting, but should not be a surprise.
Once again, I was not surprised by the lack of systems other than those based on the Linux kernel in the top ten (as well as in the second), but the third ten showed that you are also interested in other systems.
